i bowl with bumpers

have i ever mentioned im horrible at bowling? unless there is bumpers. i like bumpers, except for the staff often think we are waiting for some 5 year old to bowl with us and thats why we have requested the bumpers. bumpers basically defeat the need for talent in bowling. they cover the gutter to prevent gutter balls and allows the bowling ball to always hit at least one pin (usually more). anyways, yesterday i went bowling for my friends 24th birthday.  heres proof of my lack of bowling ability:
starbucks -  yup thats me.
lisa gave us each a nickname.
ps: the game only had 10 bowls each, this was the score in the 9th.
slightly embarrassing.. next time we should mini put :)

poetry

i was thinking today about great writers. not necessarily famous writers - well known or legendary - i mean people who write letters, emails, notes and blogs so beautifully. these people are intellectual, they think, they are smart. words are powerful and im just beginning to fathom this fact. i've always enjoyed reading books and academic literature but my love of reading came more from the love of the story. a love for the place the author was taking me and guiding my thoughts, a love for the knowledge i was gaining from the information i was reading. only recently have realized i love words and the messages the words on a paper are relaying to me. i have more of an appreciation for how creatively and artistically writers put words together.
today i went to the bookstore. i went to get my coffee and walked around the bookstore for a while. i ended up in the poetry section. poetry, really? ive never ventured to that section of the bookstore before. i spent about 30 minutes in the section, pulling out a few books and reading a poem or two from a few writers. poetry is one of those things ive never really appreciated very much and its probably for the reason i just mentioned above. i decided i want to read some poetry. see if i am able to appreciate it. e.e cummings, dylan thomas anyone?

making my winter a whole lot better

i love looking out my bedroom window when this is what i see
beautiful and perfect winter weather: fluffy snow flakes falling,
cold enough that snow accumulates on the ground,
tree branches weighed down by mass amounts of independently weightless snow

look who got a hair cut!

before:
please notice guinness's abnormally large feet due to excess amounts of fur
additionally, his ears had knots in and he had an unusual amount of butt fluff.
butt fluff: fur around tail and back of hind legs

after:

please notice the significant decrease in feet fluff and the size of his ears.
mister guinness had his first appointment at the groomers yesterday:
shampoo, blow dry, hair cut, hair brush, nail trim and even a teeth brush.
he is a happy boy and he also smells good.

dancing in the dark has evolved

In 1984 young bruce springsteen released a song called dancing in the dark.

In 2011 some women who goes by the name of dev released a song called dancing in the dark.

listen how different the lyrics to these two songs are. what are the implications of each? its slightly amazing how society has become accepting of such explicit music over less than 30 years. dev's lyrics are not alone.. music lyrics, music videos, movies, magazines etc., are so provocative they would have not been socially acceptable 30 years ago.
yup, just something i was thinking about this morning.

new years resolutions.

ive had a few people ask me about my new years resolution. it's a common question around early january, people want to know what others have challenged themselves for the new year or what ambitions others have of themselves. actually, i find it extremely hard to make new years resolutions. when do you begin to think of them? if someone tells me early december to form some kind of ambitious goal for myself for the new year, is that enough time? is that how it is supposed to be done or are you supposed to create these "new years resolutions" in january? goals are created as ambitions change. what i want for myself in january.. will they be the same in august? if you don't complete these goals or tasks by december of that year should this be stressful or disappointing? i guess we could use the numerical year as a due date as long as we know it can be adjusted if necessary. since i dont want to give up on goals i create in january at the beginning of the year and have not completed by december at the end of the year, i prefer to create any goals as i carry out life throughout the year. i understand why sometimes setting a year's deadline for these goals is a strategy for structure and organization, sometimes a fresh start to a new year. i'm just not very successful at making new years resolutions, id rather make goals throughout the year and leave it up to daily matters to map out deadlines as goals are accomplished and checked off my mental checklist.
