i need some geography 101

i haven't taken a geography course in a long time. i wish i had. i hate not knowing things. im a smart girl (although i dont write here with adequate grammar or appropriate punctuation) but when it comes to geography i dont know much at all.
today was Earth day. my family and i decided to go on a hike along the niagra gorge. gorgeous, despite the lack of sunshine and temperatures above 10 degrees. anyways, way too many questions came to me and these questions are totally unanswered due to my lack of knowledge! it drives me insane! okay.. so why do rocks crack and split the way they do? my sister actually explained this to me. its because water settles in small cracks and when its cold enough for this water to freeze, it expands and causes rocks to crack. also, why are stones round? i mean i thought they were pieces of larger rocks. what is under the layers of rock? how far down are the rocks? how do trees form around layers and layers of rocks? do they have nutrients for the trees to grow? how are the roots of trees strong enough to loosen rocks from where they lay implanted in soil and dirt. Wait.. are soil and dirt the same thing? okay see.. not very intelligent when it comes to geography, geology and all this rock stuff.. but i took some nice pictures.

 .. start of our hike

is this the work of a beaver? or am i dumb for thinking that?

my sisters and i

there was an ice chunk! thats how cold it was!

it was fun, although i would prefer if it was a bit warmer! ohh so after we walked around niagra on the lake and got some coffee to warm us up.
